Hit Breakdown: Two autographs
Summary: When I saw the first images of 2016/17 Panini Prizm basketball I wasn't really that enamored with the set. I didn't love the design, which is important to me. But, as time went on, I started to get the itch to open something. So, I broke down, drove to the LCS, and grabbed a box.
Overall, after having them in my hand, my initial impression of the cards themselves stands. I think the borders are too busy, and I don't love the black honeycomb thing they have going on. The colored accents are nice but I think they could have possibly married the honeycomb and color somehow to de-clutter the cards.
That said, it was a fun break. I haven't paid too much attention to what everyone else has been pulling out of their boxes, so I don't know if the amount of colored parallels I pulled is the norm or an aberration. But, there were a decent amount of numbered Prizms, even though none were TOO low (none lower than /49). It was nice to pull a numbered rookie, though. Pascal Siakam isn't lighting the league on fire but he does get quality minutes in Toronto right now.
People have been chasing Silver Prizm rookies a lot lately, so pulling four of those was nice. Plus, one was Jaylen Brown, a high pick, so if he pans out that could turn out to be a great card.
The autos were nothing huge. CJ McCollum showed up again (pulled one of his autos in my last Hoops break), and he's a really solid, if not underrated player. Plus, it was a Blue /49 variation, so that was cool. The second auto was some dude who is currently playing in Turkey (Zach Auguste). He was with the Lakers for about 15 minutes, so maybe he'll end up back in the NBA at some point.
My one gripe about Prizm continues - there are too many variations. It used to be so simple, but a look at the checklist shows there are 13 Prizm variations in 2016/17, which is just absurd.
All that said, Prizm is just a nice product year in and year out. I don't love this year's design but it's once again a good mid-end product that delivers a lot of bang for the buck.
