Product: 2013-14 Hoops jumbo
Break Date: November 3, 2013
Breakdown: Three guaranteed hits: two autographs, 1 jersey card
Summary: While Hoops is a low-end product, as a set builder, I really enjoy it. This year, Panini upped their game with the initial product of the season, the 10-pack jumbo box. With 50 cards per pack, the boxes pack a wallop at the price point (between $90 and $110).
This year's product has gold variations, red back variations (regular version has black copy/logos on the back) along with the standard card. The photography is stellar, and the card design is really, really clean.
The base set is 300 deep so it's a good product for set builders, and with three hits per jumbo box, it's a fun break. But, the auto set is also deep at 200 cards, so there's a high percent chance that the autos you pull are going to be mediocre.
The first auto came out of the first pack, and it was un-inspiring - Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. Not long after, the jersey card surfaced – Carmelo Anthony (pretty satisfying).
Then, the hit of the box came out - a gold Michael Carter-Williams rookie. MCW has been stellar out of the gate this season, and the card is pulling $40+ on eBay. The Miami Heat Champions short print was in the box, and the final auto was Chicago Bulls rookie Erik Murphy. As a Gator alum, it's a nice PC card even though it isn't a high-dollar card.
