2015-16 Panini Hoops Basketball hobby box x 2

Sport:  Basketball
Product:  2015-16 Panini Hoops
Break Date:  October 24, 2015
Hit Breakdown:   Two autographs
Summary:  I thought last year's Hoops product was a step forward for Panini's flagship low-end release. They added nice parallels and did a good job with the inserts, so it made for a fun break.

This year, they took a bigger step in the right direction with Hoops - it's a really strong product.

First off - the inserts. With fewer inserts per box, they seemed to have focused on quality, and really did an outstanding job. Panini has used holofoil to accent the card designs, and they look real sharp.

Second - card quality. I think they did a great job on improving the overall quality of the printing process. Last year, the black accents seemed to come out of the box chipped in places, and these seemed to be fairly clean.

And lastly, the autographs, The card designs (Hot Signatures, at least) seem tailor-made for sticker autographs, so while some folk will feel it's lipstick on a pig, I think they're making the best of a hard situation. I don't expect on-card autos at Hoops's price point.

As far as my particular break, though - not exactly thrilling. The first box had two fairly week autographs; the second at least had Devin Booker, who was a lottery pick.

The inserts were nice, but all the numbered cards and parallels were fairly blase – at least one of the two Artist's Proofs /99 was Zach Randolph, a nice PC card. The gold and green parallels were basically no one to blow my skirt up.

Overall, I really like Hoops, and generally I'm not opening any product, let alone one like Hoops, to make any sort of profit. That said, I wish I had walked away with some more PC stuff...but I also know you can't win 'em all. If Devin Booker turns into a stud, then maybe it'll end up being a better break. As of now, though, the major cards from these boxes were merely pedestrian.
